Formed in 1970 by parents of children with diabetes, The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation has become the world's leading nongovernmental funder for diabetes research, awarding more than $1.4 billion to institutions. Its goal is not simply to find ways to manage diabetes, but to find a cure.

In addition to supporting the flagship chapter, The Houston Gulf Coast Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation hosts four fundraising events and an active family support program. The chapter hosts a Walk to Cure Diabetes in Houston each fall, and Kids Walks throughout the school year. The Golf Classic is held at the end of winter, and the Promise Ball is held each spring. The Ride to Cure program hosts five rides around the country from July to November.
